This dataset documents the data processing and analysis underlying the project “Peripartum Timing, Agricultural Productivity, Food Security, and Child Health in Africa” (IZA/FCDO G²LM|LIC Project 918), implemented by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).
The study examines how the timing of pregnancy and childbirth (peripartum period: three months before and after birth) interacts with agricultural labor demand in rainfed farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Using multi-country panel data, the project investigates impacts on agricultural labor supply, productivity, food security, and child health outcomes.
The empirical analysis is based on harmonized household survey data combined with environmental data. Specifically, longitudinal household data from LSMS-ISA surveys are linked with rainfall and agricultural seasonality indicators to identify whether peripartum periods coincide with peak agricultural labor demand.
As shown in the project’s policy brief , births during peak growing seasons are associated with reduced labor supply, lower yields, increased food insecurity, and worse child health outcomes (e.g. lower anthropometric z-scores and higher stunting risk).
Important Note on Data Availability
The datasets used in this project are secondary data derived from publicly available sources (e.g. LSMS-ISA).
- The original data are subject to third-party licensing and access conditions.
- The deposited files (if included) represent processed/cleaned analytical datasets.
- Public redistribution of these data may be restricted or prohibited depending on the original data providers.
- In addition, data are under Embargo. During the embargo period, the public will only be able to view metadata about the embargoed datasets, as well as the date the datasets’ embargo period ends and is available publicly. This dataset will be made available on 27 March 2029.
